The story behind the art
The central symbol in this mandala is the Unalome. I love the symbol of the Unalome as it represents a person's path through life. We start at the centre of the spiral and unfurl into the twists and turns of life, which can be filled with challenges, anxiety, fear, lessons we need to learn. But eventually the path straightens, which can be viewed as a state of finding our centre, overcoming our challenges, having mental freedom and perhaps even enlightenment. I combined the lotus with the Unalome to add the additional symbolism of the lotus, which grows out of muddy waters, to rise above the darkness and blossom open one petal at a time.
